Repsol in Libya

Libya is the sixth-largest economy in Africa thanks to its oil, which makes up 95% of its total exports. Libya is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north and shares borders with Tunisia, Algeria, Niger, Chad, Sudan, and Egypt.

Repsol’s first exploration and production activities in Libya date back to the early seventies with a focus on our Upstream business. Since then, the success achieved by Repsol in its projects and discoveries have contributed to making Libya one of the most outstanding countries for Repsol's growth strategy, and are also making a strong contribution to the development and consolidation of the current and future wealth of the country.

Currently, we carry out operations through our subsidiary Repsol Exploration Murzuq S.A. (REMSA), while the development and production operations are conducted by Akakus Oil Operations;  a joint operating company on behalf of the Libyan National Oil Corporation (First Party) and the Second party (Repsol, TotalEnergies, OMV and Equinor). the assets have a potential of producing aroung 350 thousand barrels of oil per day. production is evacuated to the tank farm located in the city of Zawia, 723 kms from the El Sharara Field (the producing asset). the tank farm has a capacityd of 2.7 million barrels and is feeding the local refinery as well as the tanker loading facilities for export.

We are the operators of this block with a 32% stake, together with the Libyan National Oil Company and three European companies: OMV (Austria), TotalEnergies (France), and Equinor (Norway).

NC 115

In 2003 we discovered well A1-129/02 in this block, with very light, high-quality oil (39° API) in the prolific Murzuq basin, 800 the south of Tripoli. This is the third well made in this block, which covers 4,440 km2 and has proven an excellent level of quality as fossil fuel reserves.

REMSA signed an Exploration and Production Sharing Agreement (EPSA IV) in which NOC is the First Party and REMSA, together with three European companies: TotalEnergies, (France), OMV (Austria) and Equinor* (Norway), represent the Second Party.

The Second Party is represented by REMSA in the production activities while the exploration activities are 100% executed by REMSA. The maximum Second Party share of production is 13% in Contract Areas 129/130 (NC115) and 12% in Contract Areas 130/131 (NC186). The exploration activities are 100% borne by the Second Party with the following shares for Repsol:

  • Contract Areas 129/130 (NC115): 40%.
  • Contract Areas 130/131 (NC186): 32%.
