How many types of hydrogen are there?
Depending on the raw material that is used and the CO2 emissions required to obtain it, hydrogen is classified into the following types:
Green or renewable hydrogen
Green or renewable hydrogen
It is the hydrogen that is extracted through the process of electrolysis from water and renewable electricity. Green hydrogen is considered to be hydrogen obtained through biogas reforming and the biochemical conversion of biomass, provided that sustainability requirements are met.
Blue or low-carbon footprint hydrogen
Blue or low-carbon footprint hydrogen
In the production of this type of hydrogen, Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) techniques are applied, which reduces CO2 emissions generated during the process by up to 95%.
Gray or high-emissions hydrogen
Gray or high-emissions hydrogen
It is hydrogen obtained from natural gas or other light hydrocarbons, such as methane or liquefied petroleum gases. 95% of hydrogen consumed in Spain is currently of this type.
