The Rewofuel project aims to demonstrate the technical, environmental, and socioeconomic viability of transforming plant waste into biofuels through the process of hydrolysis.

Rewofuel is part of the European Union's Horizon 2020 program that will last three years. The project has 11 European partners, including the most innovative companies and technology centers in Europe.

What does it consist of step-by-step?

The project consists of the conceptual design of a biorefinery for converting plant waste into biofuels following a multi-stage transformation process.

The biofuels obtained are based on a single compound, bioisobutene, as a direct alternative to the same compound from fossil fuels. In addition, a series of co-products are obtained that also have energy applications in some cases, such as lignin and biogas, and in other cases can be used in the formulation of bitumen, animal feed, or organic fertilizers.

 

The important role of the Repsol Technology Lab

Evaluating and guaranteeing the incorporation of the biofuels obtained in gasoline formulations and aviation fuels such as jet fuel are part of the tasks that we undertake at the Repsol Technology Lab.

We are in charge of characterizing the compounds obtained, incorporating them into the final formulations, and verifying that these formulations meet all the necessary requirements to be placed on the market.

 

Circular benefits

If the project achieves the expected success, the first biorefinery of its kind could reduce CO2 emissions by 510,000 tonnes per year, a milestone in terms of environmental sustainability.
