Commitment to safety

An inseparable part of our organizational culture

Safety is fundamental and non-negotiable and it must guide all of our actions and commitments. Our safety culture encompasses the behaviors, beliefs, and values that all of the people at our company share as a way of controlling the risks present in our activities.

We are committed to safety

We develop our commitment to safety and environment through the practice and dissemination of basic behaviors in our activities.

  1. We assume individual responsibility for safety and the environment.
  2. We set a visible example of our commitment to safety and the environment.
  3. We act with the firm conviction that all incidents are avoidable.
  4. We train people to act as leaders in safety and the environment.
  5. We demonstrate and demand individual responsibility in safety and the environment from all employees, systematizing positive and negative knowledge.
  6. We consider safety and the environment as the first criterion in the decision-making process.
  7. We are proactive in systematically identifying safety and environment risks with deficiencies and opportunities for improvement.
  8. We immediately correct the deficiencies identified in safety and the environment.

Safety culture model

Safety culture is what determines how we act when we are not being supervised, making us feel innately responsible for prioritizing safety in our actions. At Repsol, we have designed our own safety culture model based on seven attributes.

  • Leadership

    Vision of safety shared at all levels of the organisation through exemplariness, visibility, co-operation and team spirit. The safety leader is present in the field, listens and communicates effectively and encourages employees’ safety initiatives.

  • Fair recognition

    Negotiated criteria and courses of action which allow the recognition and reproval of safety behaviours.

  • Adaptability

    Active and vigilant attitude in the identification and diagnosis of anomalies, changes and alterations in the production process.

  • Trust in reporting

    Our employees report any dysfunctions that could affect safety, as well as near misses, incidents and accidents.

  • Sense of vulnerability

    Attitude of the organisation's members to risk: critical sense, commitment to continuous improvement and non-conformity with the measures taken to avoid major accidents.

  • Shared information

    Reporting of actions undertaken, directives, data, improvement projects and corrective actions. Active participation and communication are encouraged.

  • An organisation that learns

    Lessons learned outside and inside the Company are known by the members of the organisation and are embedded in our directives. The organisation has methods for preventing the loss of knowledge.

This model was developed in collaboration with the Institute for a Culture of Industrial Safety (ICSI) and is the result of the analysis of best practices in industry and risk sectors, reference prescriptive bodies, and consolidated models such as J. Reason. 

Assessment methodology

Our assessment methodology analyzes the degree of maturity of the safety culture in the different facilities or business units. With the results obtained during these evaluations, we develop improvement plans. This assessment is developed in four stages.

With our policy, we promote:
  • Leadership and culture. The Executive Committee leads occupational health and safety programs, considering them as a priority in decision-making. 
  • Safety and environmental criteria throughout the activity cycle. We ensure proactive risk management throughout the activity cycle in order to prevent damage to people and the environment and prevent major accidents.
  • Continuous improvement. We involve employees, contractors, and other stakeholders in continuous improvement and in the definition of health and safety management programs and systems to provide a healthy and safe working environment.
  • Environment of trust. We promote the transparent flow of information because we treat human error as a source of learning that allows us to prevent damage.
  • Human factors. We consider human factors as a determining element for improvement, promoting and recognizing desirable behaviors, while demanding individual accountability and compliance with standards and procedures.
Furthermore, we comply with the stricitest international standards in terms of safety and risk analysis:
  • We manage safety in accordance with the international standard OHSAS 18001 "Occupational Health and Safety Management System."
  • We apply international standards to ensure the safety of our processes, such as API, NFPA, ISO, EN, IEC, IOGP, or CCPS. 
  • We develop our own standards to ensure that our assets are designed, built, operated, inspected, maintained, and modified to achieve and maintain integrity and performance throughout the life cycle based on best practice.
